Does anybody have any experience with an app called Procreate ? My daughter wants to try it out.
Specifically:
What iPad would you recommend?
What Stylus tool would you recommend?

procreate is a TERRIBLE name for a design app. clever =/= smart

That’s like when Xerox bought Wurlitzer and started making reproductive organs.

Yeah, I was thinking it was one of those period/fertility tracking apps and was wondering why exactly a stylus would be involved...

Sometimes the Ops have helpful input, and sometimes, not so much.

I can only imagine the feeling/conversation/confusion that ensued after your daughter came to you and said, “Dad, I want to try procreate.”

I’m starting to play with procreate. I only downloaded it last weekend and am not an experienced drawer. That said I’m much more experienced with photoshop and the programs have a lot of similarities. I like the idea of drawing in layers and the ability to undo and play with you’re drawing. I also enjoy digital creation as I can take it with me and the ability to undo and use drawing tools, scale it up and down, sharing it digitally and the ability to easily make prints from it.
I have the current IPad Air and the Apple Pencil one. It’s seems really nice to me. I’ve worked a little with a Wacom Intuos, I find this much nicer as I can see what I’m drawing while I’m drawing it as opposed to drawing on the black plastic Wacom while looking at a screen instead. That said a starter intuos is much much cheaper with it starting at I think $60-70.
The Apple Pencil is going to be the nicest stylus for an iPad so if you go for that you’ll need to make sure you get one that is pencil compatible. I think even the cheapest current iPad is compatible and can be found under $300 a lot, s ometimes as low as $250. I would check a website called slickdeals for deals on them. Just search iPad in the search bar. There’s also an Apple Pencil 1 ($100) and Apple Pencil 2 ($130). The 2 goes with the IPad pros models.
I don’t have experience with anything else but I’d recommend my setup which is an iPad Air (2019) ($500) with the Apple Pencil 1 ($100). Worth noting is that assuming you’re daughter is in school she can probably get the education discount from the Apple education store. At least I can as a college student. I think you get $10-15 off the pencil and I got $30 off the iPad that way. Slickdeals might beat that too. If that is too expensive I’d probably go with the 9.7” iPad and the Apple Pencil one.
Going for the air will give you a better processor, larger and more color accurate 10.5” screen, the smart connector on the side which means you can use an Apple keyboard with it which could expand its role to something for note taking and lighter computer work and a lighter machine.
I hope that helps, I just did this researching a few months ago. Let me know if you have any questions.

Momentary cognitive dissonance, but not a big deal.

This is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to put it all down. I’ll have a couple of questions for you, but busy long weekend...
I’ll be in touch. Thanks again.
